Windsor, with about 330,000 people in the metro area, is right across the river from Detroit Michigan (3.8 million). It is Canada's southernmost city, and is home to Canada's Southern-most university. With a milder climate than the rest of Canada (its surrounded by water on three sides, keeping it warmer in the winter), Windsor also offers some of the lowest cost of living of the country's cities. 4 hours from Toronto by car or train, 30 minutes by plane (more than 10 flights daily), Windsor is at the centre of North America with easy access to Chicago, Pittsburgh and Nashville. The commutes are short, the food is good with plenty of fresh local produce for much of the year, and with a large diverse population from around the world, it is an incredibly friendly city to those of us who came from outside of Essex County, whether that be Ottawa (like John) or Iran (like so many members of the group). Home to way more distilleries and microbreweries than any City needs, it is also in the heart of the Lake Erie-North Shore wine region, Canada's third largest, and specializing in cool climate whites and reds. Traditionally a blue-collar town and the centre of the Canadian auto industry, much of the core of the city was built in the 1890s-1920s in a pre-car era making it easy to get around. It is now becoming a hub for high-tech, advanced manufacturing, and agricultural technology companies, and is also the home to several chemical manufacturers. It is a perfect place to do chemistry.

The University of Windsor also ushered in a new era in September 2015 with the opening of classes at the first phase of its downtown campus in the heart of Windsor’s core. The new building, Windsor Hall — which retains the historic facade of the former Windsor Star newspaper building — houses the School of Social Work and the Centre for Executive and Professional Education.
The second phase of the downtown campus is home to the School of Creative Arts, located in the century-old site of the Windsor Armouries and the adjacent Alan Wildeman Centre for Creative Arts.
